Moral Reconation Therapy in Toledo, OH – (419) 299-4060
Moral Reconation Therapy or MRT is a type of cognitive-behavioral therapy for addiction that was developed in 1988 and has been evaluated in more than 75 published research studies. The purpose of MRT is to help people who suffer from drug and alcohol addiction make more responsible decisions in the future in order to benefit themselves, their families and society at large.
While MRT was initially developed to treat people in prison systems, moral reconation therapy is now widely used for substance abuse among people of all ages, education levels and walks of life. MRT is unique in that it can be beneficial for people with a diverse range of abilities, and it is able to meet the needs of people with a wide range of learning styles.
What MRT Involves
MRT relies on the idea that people who abuse drugs and alcohol seek out pleasure and do everything they can to avoid feeling pain and discomfort. Through a series of 16 units, MRT therapy groups focus on:
. Taking responsibility for one’s actions
. Developing trust in oneself, in the program and in the group
. Becoming adaptable and flexible both in one’s actions and beliefs
. Understanding why following rules and laws is beneficial
. Conducting an honest evaluation of one’s current state in life
. Starting to repair relationships that have been damaged by substance abuse
. Fostering a desire to help others without expecting something in return
. Setting goals for the future and working to achieve them
. Persevering in times of adversity
. Owning up to mistakes and learning from them
. Identifying attitudes, beliefs and behaviors that are harmful to oneself and others
. Dedicating oneself to behaving in an ethical, responsible manner
. Reassessing goals and striving to be the best person one can be
For substance abuse treatment, moral reconation therapy may be done on an outpatient basis or as a part of an inpatient rehab program. Typically, groups meet at least once or twice per week. The speed at which the group progresses through the 16 units of MRT can vary. On average, a full MRT program will require 3 to 6 months to complete.
MRT usually does not begin until a person has already dealt with the physical dependence on drugs and alcohol that could lead them to return to substance abuse. In rehab programs, MRT may be preceded with medical detox to help people transition away from substance abuse as quickly and safely as possible.
